The Risks

From Buddy T, your Guide to Alcoholism
Over the years, researchers continually find that fathers can play a huge role in preventing substance abuse problems in their children, and on the other hand, be a bad influence by example. This special Father's Day edition of the Alcoholism / Substance Abuse newsletter features research into the role that fathers can play.

Drinking Fathers Bad Influence on Teens
Teens who live with fathers who drink are more likely to drink alcohol, binge drink and use illicit drugs than teens whose fathers do not drink. If the father drinks to the point of having an alcohol abuse disorder, the chances of the teen drinking and doing drugs increases dramatically.

Father's Drinking Affects Kids
Alcohol-abusing fathers are less-sensitive parents and some, but not all, children of such fathers exhibited emotional and behavioral problems.

When Fathers Recover, Children Improve
Researchers have found that when fathers recover from substance abuse, children exhibit significant improvements in psychosocial functioning.

Fathers Less Likely To Talk With Kids About Drugs
Survey data released by the Partnership for a Drug-Free America reports that fathers talk less often with their children about the issue of drugs than do mothers.
