With almost all of my games, Mass Effect, Swat 4, COD 4 MW are some examples, they lag at semi random times. They play at way high fps but certain things trigger a huge frame
drop down to 0 for a second or two. Things like the first time i pull up the binoculors or the first shot i take. In general it seems semi random is the best I can put it.
Some games I have no trouble with, Classic UT and Bad Company 2 for example. On the games that do lag the only thing I can narrow down hardware wise is the size of the disk.
I started with 4 1.5tb western digital black drives in raid 0 and it lagged super hard, took them out of raid and played on the drives individually and it lagged pretty bad,
played on a 320gb segate there was moderate lag, played on my 64gb SSD or my 8Gb flash drive, no lag whatsoever. I need the disk space but I dont know what the problem is.
I have tried closing various programs before playing and tried messing with the page file. Here is my hardware currently.
Asus Crosshair IV
8gb DDR 3
phenom 1098t amd 6 core
Ati sapphire 5870
850w Thermaltake PSU
2 1.5tb Western digital blacks in raid 0
1 1.5tb wd black non raid
1 64gb crucial SSD

Hi smak0 and welcome to TSF,
Make sure that you defrag your HDDs regularly. Try not to have the pagefile on the same HDD as your games. (needs to be on the OS drive)
As you have 8GB of RAM i would suggest you try dropping your pagefile to a small amount like 1GB. This way your OS and games will use more of your avalible RAM and rely less on pagefile.
Pagefile can be disabled completely but can cause system stability issues on some systems.
Also i'd recommend not installing games on a SSD because they only have a limited number of read/writes before they become unreliable. (Not a perfected technology yet) But they are great to install an OS onto.
How are you setting your RAID up. Via the BIOS or Windows?
All the best,
